My Top Favorite Manga

Without I realize, my blog had gotten more than 50.000 views. Banzai! To commemorate this, as usual, I intend to write something personal. And this time I want to write about my favorite manga of all time. As you know, I'm an avid reader of manga and I've collected several series which crowded about 4 of my bookshelves. I would not include manga that still on-going on this list, so you would not see One Piece or Skip Beat. I will only include manga that had already ended. Okay, here we go:

ANIME AND MANGA THIS WEEK: 27/10/2013

ANIME:

---KUROSHITSUJI- Black Butler, it's been a few years since i learnt of the existence of this manga, and anime; though it is only now that i have taken it upon myself to actually check it out. Well, maybe that isn't entirely true, i gave the manga a go a few years back and i was sorely disappointed, dropping it five chapters in. The anime is another issue, the story proving to be more intriguing than i credited it the first time.

The anime follows the story of young Ciel Phantomhive, earl of somewhere, who, following the tragic death of his parents and the circumstances that followed entered a contract with a demon named Sebastian, now butler to the phantomhive house.

Musical Monday 9

Well I have been procrastinating my homework and studying for midterms as much as possible. I should procrastinate more by writing things on blogs rather than watching streams of hearthstone and Dota 2 all day like I did yesterday. Either way I had to remember to get this post done, because I forgot last week. I will try to get more non Musical Monday's up soon, but I have not had time to really watch that much anime.

Today's musical Monday is going to showcase the opening of Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO). I really need to finish this anime. I got half way through but stopped because I had other priorities in anime watching, but GTO is hilarious. You will see why just from watching the opening.

What Makes a "Good" Character?

The last couple of weeks have been pretty rough for me. So, this week, while looking up something I can't even remember now, I got sidetracked (pfft, like that never happens) on an old TV show that holds some particularly good memories for me. Because I had been having such a bad time of it, remembering this show was a bit like a happy drug. I broke down and bought the DVD. I waited anxiously all week for it, and it finally arrived on Thursday. I finished watching the entire series by Friday night. But some interesting thoughts occurred to me while I was enjoying this old favourite.

Random Thought (October 04, 2013 at 09:38PM)

Random Thought 483

I just finished watching the timeless classic Great Teacher Onizuka. One thing I realized after watching this anime is that Onizuka isn't really great after all but the Greatest Teacher ever! To be honest the first 3 episodes of GTO didn't really interest me that much. I thought it was just some gangster teacher who tries to do some random irrelevant things as a teacher. But after watching episodes 4 until the very end, I am so glad that I have watched it. I'm really proud of myself that I am one of those who have already watched this one of a kind masterpiece anime. Great Teacher Onizuka in the end teaches you the ultimate lessons in life. I know that I might be over exaggerating things, but I just have to say it just so I can clearly state out my entire point of the show. So without a doubt this anime really deserves my 10 out of 10. It's my 2nd 10/10 this year and it's not quite long ago since I last rated an anime 10/10 which was Blood+ in the last couple of weeks.

Due to the unexpected 1 week suspension of classes a few weeks ago, I need to reschedule my term break activity. I have decided to hold Steins;Gate as I have found a good VN that really has good reviews. Not that I don't like the Steins;Gate VN it's just that I have already watched the anime and it's still fresh in my mind.

Great Teacher Onizuka

Recently I randomly bumped into watching a show in Youtube called "Great Teacher Onizuka" or Just GTO for short (watching it in Japanese with English subtitles) and it's one of the more enjoyable and influential shows I've ever seen. It was great for learning Japanese, but really it didn't need to be helpful for learning the language to be enjoyable. It's just a really great show. It's got an all-encompassing theme of how to be a great teacher, good lead actor with various minor characters, has subplots and comedic moments, and things that relate to real-life events. Basically, each episode this former gangster-turned teacher Onizuka Sensei (Mr. Onizuka) helps out a student in his misbehaved 2-4 high school class and teaches real life lessons rather than the pure academia that is thrust on high schoolers in Japan (and probably many other countries, for that matter). It's like a nice blend of Karate Kid (Onizuka befriends his students) and Boston Public (show about teachers) in Japanese. Spoiler Alert: My favorite storyline was about a ditzy girl who was controlled by the "Mean Girls" faction of the class who talked to herself through a toy duck (perhaps a metaphor about being an ugly duckling but there were no Sparknotes to help me with the interpretation of certain themes) but then (at the urging of Onizuka Sensei) entered into a talent pageant where she discovered that she had to like herself more in order to respect herself, eventually going to a talent academy and appearing on TV, going onto bigger and better things. That's gotta be one of the best feelings of being a teacher/parent, when your prot g /child who you believe in and have invested a lot of time/effort/emotional energy actually achieves his her potential. Just great.

Basically the highlight of my day for about a week and a half. Couldn't wait to finish my work day to get home and watch it. 1.)TV shows back in the day (even, I guess in foreign mediums) have their deficiencies but also have their charms. Because they didn't worry about special effects, cinematography, and the latest gadgets of moviemaking/TV-making, they focused on things they could control, like, say .the plot???? Really I think that's something modern TV shows can work on, although I understand their motivations: TV shows have to get picked up by television programs and make it through their pilot, and the main factors in doing so are usually 1.) what the audience wants, 2.) what big-name actors/actresses can we get people to get excited about a show, and 3.) what wild and crazy things can we do to separate ourselves from every other TV show? Notice that plot isn't really in there; TV shows just aren't made to tell a good story anymore, IMO (with rare exceptions of Breaking Bad, etc.) 2.)When was the last great TV show about teachers? Glee? I don't think that counts. Boston Public?Didn't really watch that show. Veronica Mars? I guess the American audience is tired of real life and is in a very fantasy-driven, vampires-dragons-zombies-magical powers stretch (See popular shows True Blood, Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Once Upon a Time, and commercial success of Harry Potter, Hunger Games type movies) 3.)I've always considered becoming a teacher, and this show really gave me insight into whether I should pursue that in the future or not. Obviously very dramatized, and didn't really depict the day-to-day grind of what a teacher is like (in fact, Onizuka Sensei is often skipping class and doing things OTHER than teaching) but the effect on student's lives and perception of adults rings true throughout the series and emphasizes the value of teaching, especially the value of a good teacher who can relate to his students. 4.)I perceived this too when I was in high school, and now that my sister is in high school I'm reminded sometimes of this fact, but it's tough to be a high schooler. People in high school are mean. The high school hierarchy is dominated by young adults who have the desire to become adults and do adult things but do not have the social ability to cope with all situations and haven't developed the maturity to know what is right or wrong. Also, one's self identity is often overly proportionate to how one fits into the social setting, where one or two bullies/"cool kids" have way too much control over others' lives (whereas adults can just shrug it off and ignore people who they don't like being around, high schoolers have to be in the same setting and attend the same classes and be around the same people all the time, as if it was a prison). Some kids are just downright mean, not necessarily because they are awful people but because that is the accepted way to deal with other people, or they are asserting social power without cognizance of its effect on others. Possibly the most difficult time in one's life, and it's really helpful if there is someone older who has gone through that (like Onizuka in the TV series) who can give helpful advice without inserting their own desires/ambitions for the child (like parents). 5.)For those learning Japanese, this series was a great way to hone listening skills, especially casual conversation going at the normal rate of conversation for most Japanese. It is pretty fast, and I had to rewind several areas to get a good read on the exact words they were using, and even then I sometimes only picked up a few key words in a sentence, but it was definitely helpful, especially confirming that the colloquial terms and one-word phrases that one learns in textbooks actually are used by Japanese speakers (at least they did in 1998, when this TV series was one of the most-watched TV series in all of Japan). Also, it gave me a great lesson that I have to learn the conjugations of verbs, where I had skipped a lot of the tenses and conjugations of the verbs because I was lazy and felt like I could do it later, listening confirmed that you have to have knowledge of these tenses or else you don't understand what people are saying, or what they are referring to. It's just like English, French, Spanish, all these romance languages (but not Chinese, where it's not especially important): there's a reason all these language schools teach the conjugations and drill them home.

The Greatest Teacher in all Japan

Just recently I got around to watching one of my favorite animes. This anime is about an ex-biker gang leader who became a teacher. Some of you may know that the anime I am talking about is GTO or Great Teacher Onizuka.

As I mentioned above the anime is about Eikichi Onizuka, a ex-biker gang leader. For someone who was once a delinquent, school was probably the last place he'd end up. Despite very little social grace and stunningly low intelligence, he manages to work his way through college and try out teaching (just so he could have a chance at high school girls).

Anyway, the series follows his adventures in becoming the greatest teacher in all Japan. What he lacks as a traditional teacher, he makes up for as a friend. Though he is not very capable at teaching book smarts, his life lessons work miracles in the lives of the children he teaches.

Go Nagai Holy Trinity GET!

PICTURED: THE BEST SURPRISE I'VE HAD IN AGES.

, Discotek announced the 1972 DEVILMAN/ TV series was joining their DVD line-up alongside the previously announced CUTIE HONEY and MAZINGER Z sets. These titles are easily the three most famous and influential pieces of the Nagaiverse, and I couldn't be happier that the trio are finally due for an as-of-yet pinned down US premier. None of these titles have even been fansubbed past the first few episodes - not last time I bothered to check, at any rate - and with Go Nagai's less than chipper attitude towards how American publishers treated his comics in the early 90s, I wasn't convinced we'd ever see them in English.

Anime has reentered my life officially

I decided to only watch top tier anime from now on since I don't really have the time to mess around with some sub par story telling or anime with a bad ending. I went on myanimelist.com and looked at the top 30 anime tv shows of all time and I realized I have seen over half of them but still plenty of new shows to experience. I choose to watch Great Teacher Onizuka which is a late 90s anime that contains a total of 43 episodes. Its about a former top tier gang member who wants to become a teacher and his main reason for it is to pick up hot young high school girls. Onizuka is a really funny, goofy guy who means well and he uses methods that many teachers would frown upon but they work better than any other method. He is a teacher who wants his students to learn and respect themselves and others but there are always people teachers/students who are trying to get him fired. I have watched 8 episodes and each one has actually made me LOL so hard. Its a lot of fun just to see how Onizuka approaches different situations and how it ends up working for him. From what I read the show keeps the humor going and is a must watch for someone who wants some comedy in their life.

I also want to mention a really bad anime that I watched earlier this year and that is Sword Art Online. Sword Art Online has such an amazing concept of being stuck in a MMO with 10,000 people and if you die in the game you die in real life and the only way you can leave the game is to win. The first 15 episodes are AWESOME but then o my the second half had to exist and everything went to shit. The ending makes no sense and they just throw everyone into another gaming world and its just a whole bunch of stupid crap that should not exist. It is a disgrace to anime honestly. It also has a creepy brother and sister complex and rape vibe at the end. The last fight in the game and the final fight in the real world MAKE NO SENSE AT ALL!HOW CAN A 16 YEAR OLD BOY OVERPOWER A GROWN MAN WHO IS STRIKING YOU DOWN WITH A KNIFE USING TWO HANDS!??!?!! He gets over powered by 1 hand and then chokes out the bad guy with the same fucking hand like wtf its not like his knife just stopped coming down. I'm so done with that shit, I am going to be livid if Attack on Titan pulls some dumb shit like this. Also none of the magic cards looked interesting to me today, maybe tomorrow I'll get more sliver love?!~

What a good day

I have to say I had a fucking awesome 4th of July. I played 10 games of Magic with my friend today and I reached a perfect level, I truly did ascend. I watched more Great Teacher Onizuka and there is this one episode where the math teacher is trying to get the cute female teacher and the math teacher is SO FUCKING CREEPY! His house has a telescope/camera where he stares the teacher in her house and he can hear all her conversations the fuck. His room is covered in pictures of her like why do people like this exist?! Does he jizz on these pictures or what how could you bring your mom over?! I fucking love anime and all the weird shit it has shown me.

Still today has been an intense magic day we have to look at every single last one of these new magic cards they showed today. The first one is Voracious Wurm for 1G its a 2/2 which enters the battlefield with +1/+1 counters for as much health you got back this turn. I actually like that card a lot! I run white/green so that would work perfectly in a life link type of deck and combine that with savage summoning. Next card is a 1 drop Black card called Tenacious Dead which is a 1/1 that can come back to the battlefield tapped if you pay 2 mana. Its like a worse version of grave crawler but I think its a solid zombie card. Barrage of the Expendables is a 1 drop red enchantment that lets you sacrifice a creature which does 1 damage to target player or creature. I wonder if you can sacrifice your opponents creatures? If you can that is a great card for red. Encroaching wastes is a land that adds 1 mana to your side of the field but if you pay 4 mana you can destroy target land and this card. It can be great but 4 does cost a lot imo. Blue got this card called Rewind which cast 2UU and its an instant that lets you untapped 4 lands and cancel target spell. O WOW I JUST REALIZED HOW FUCKING GOOD THAT IS!!!! I just figured out why the card is called that, I'm slow as shit. Briarpack alapha comes back but I really didn't think it was that good of a card. The other cards look so boring to me besides Verdant Haven which can make a land you control into any control land you want it to be which could work great on a sliver deck but I won't need it if I have that one sliver out. Anyways tomorrow I will sign up for the prerelease and then start studying up on someM14 combos.

Another lazy Saturday

I wish he was my teacher *sigh*

Another day of my beautiful lazy summer. I don't even know what day of the week it is to be honest without checking my phone. A bunch of my friends are gone for the weekend so I did what any normal 19 year old would do, I read manga and watched a massive amount of kpop music videos. The kpop videos are a lot different then what I usually do but my friend she just really wanted to show me all these vids and wow I have this new found respect for kpop. The music videos are so crazy I honestly thought I was tripping at one point haha. All the songs are really catchy and I have to say kpop singers are so sexy! I honestly need to go to Korea and get myself in the kpop industry so I meet these goddess. If I could be surrounded by these women I could die happy. Besides that I stopped watching Great Teacher Onizuka because I was reading how the manga is so much better and its a lot longer. My real reason to stop watching GTO is because the animation is really old and it sometimes hurts to watch haha I rather read and so I did and now I am passed where I was in anime. That is my day in a nut shell also no magic spoilers since it is the weekend that sucks, I hope they release the last 47 cards on Monday! I should really sign up for that prerelease tourney huh hahaha I am so lazy, maybe on Monday?

Why didn’t anyone force me to watch Hellsing Ultimate before?!

Another usual day in the life of being Anthony. I finished reading Great Teacher Onizuka and I am beyond sad that it had to end. It easily is one of my favorite manga of all time! The last 25 chapters are just so intense and when you reached the last page you get this feeling that this whole entire time you were one of Onizuka's students. I really wished that he was one of my teachers in high school but honestly reading this manga makes up for that, I learned a good amount of lessons from this journey. I'm also glad it ends and not even little thing is tied up because that is how life is not everything will be perfect or completed in a year you just have to leave it up to your imagination. Since I finished reading GTO I decided to watch another top 30 anime on myanimelist.com and I choose to watch Hellsing Ultimate. I never watched the original series and I read a review that said just to watch the latest version of it so I completed the first episode and this shit is radical. I always thought vampires were lame and then I watched this, its like trinity blood but WAY better. It is 10 episodes long but each one is 40 minutes plus so more like 20 episodes if you think about it like that. I'll be watching all of Hellsing Ultimate until EVO this weekend! I am REALLY terrible at fighting games but man fighting games are easily the most fun to watch. Street Fighter is easily the greatest game to watch at a pro level with all the whole wide competition. I am excited to watch all the other games like Persona 4 Arena, Mortal Kombat, Injustice and UMVC3. I wish I didn't have to miss some of Saturday's events for my Magic 14 sealed event though o well what if I become a champ?! haha O yea I watched the latest GTAV trailer today and I am super stoke for it! All the features like character stats and a weapon wheel are really going to make the game play enjoyable unlike GTAIV. I know its going to be an amazing game but I don't believe it will beat out The Last of Us for game of the year of game of generation. Anyways back to Hellsing!
